To those who play lacrosse, it’s more than just a sport – it’s a way of life. That’s exactly how all of our GameBreaker Lacrosse Camp Directors feel, too. Without this sport, the whole trajectory of their life would be different, and they don’t even want to spend a second thinking about what they’d be like without lacrosse!
There are many instances in which this sport provides metaphors for life, and it’s fun to use lacrosse as a way to make a difference and bring about positive change in this world. In the rat race of life and lacrosse, it’s easy to let the small things pass us by while worrying about other “more important” things, like winning games, championships, getting discovered by college coaches, and more.
With that in mind, here are five ways you can focus on growing your love of the game before anything else:
- Have a game of catch with a parent. It will be a good bonding experience, and if they haven’t played lacrosse before, they can see first-hand how tough it is to catch and throw a ball with the stick. If they did play lacrosse as a kid, it will be a fun way for them to get connected with the game again.
- Take some time to read up on the history of the sport. While the basics of lacrosse are the same today as they were when Native Americans were playing it, the reasoning behind certain things were much different. For instance, lax used to be a medicine game that was used to heal and lift spirits of community members.
- Love the game of lacrosse and what it’s done for you in your life? Then pass it on! Share a lacrosse stick with someone you think could use it, whether it be a young child, neighbor, or friend.
- If you’re still curious about the history of lacrosse, take your research beyond the computer and visit the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and Museum in Maryland. Doing so will help deepen your connection with the game by seeing who came before you and helped paved the way for the sport to be what it is today.
- Winning is great, but that shouldn’t be the only goal to keep in mind. Sometimes, you don’t have control over whether your team wins or loses a game, but you do have control over how you perform. After a ton of hard work, have you finally mastered the art of a successful face off? Then that’s what you should be celebrating.
At GameBreaker Lacrosse Camps, we’re proud to have all of our Camp Directors Double-Goal Certified by the Positive Coaching Alliance. The PCA’s goal is to help athletes become better both on and off the field. Our clinics are a full experience – there is a focus on improving on-field skills, but we also make sure to hit on the other aspects of the game that players will be able to transfer into their lives once their playing careers have finished.
